Following his election to the chair’s seat of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) to succeed President Ellen Jonson Sir leaf of Liberia, President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya remarked, “this is a time when the APR Mechanism calls for revitalization to effectively execute its mandate as a tool for governance transformation in the continent.”
Uhuru Kenyatta noted that the APR mechanism has lost much of
its luster as an innovative, home-grown and effective tool to deliver on good
governance for Africa, adding that the Mechanism’s promise of enhancing good
governance is fast waning.
Observing that Africa’s success on the development agenda rests on good and effective governance, the Kenyatta called for strengthening of the role of the Panel of Eminent Persons in ‘enforcing’ compliance as contemplated in the mechanism.
He underscored the need for raising the profile of APRM as
the authoritative Governance index for Africa as he promised his government’s
commitment to promote the principals of the Mechanism.
Meanwhile, Action2015/Kenya National coalition has on 15th
June 2015 welcomed President Uhuru Kenyatta’s election as the APRM chairman and
promised to engage him and his fellow African leaders on areas of concern to
the continent.
As they called for innovative initiatives, ideas and firm
commitments to address climate change, poverty and inequality in Africa, the
action215/Kenya National Coalition reaffirmed her commitment to continue with
the call to leaders in Africa and beyond to set and fund ambitious post 2015
development goals to tackle these issues.
The APR Mechanism is open to any African Union country where
interested countries are admitted upon depositing signed Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU). It is mandated to ensure that the policies and practices of
participating countries conform to the agreed values in regard to democratic
political processes, economic and corporate governance values & standards.
